SHINING THE SPOTLIGHT ON…New York City’s Premier Advocates for Unhoused People
Over 25 years ago, my law professor and the wonderful philanthropist Lou Lowenstein – and his wife Helen – connected me to the Coalition for the Homeless (CFTH).
I count myself very lucky to have served on the board of this organization, the premier group advocating for those who have been unhoused for nearly 45 years and counting. Today, more than ever, we really need nonprofits and philanthropists to stand tall for their values, undeterred in their mission no matter what external headwinds are blowing.
And throughout its history, CFTH truly has never wavered – and the examples of its focused bravery are numerous, including:
Bringing about the legal right to shelter for homeless people in New York via the seminal court case Callahan v. Carey
Building the innovative “First Step” program, which has helped thousands of women develop job skills and find living wage jobs
Welcoming homeless children to Camp Homeward Bound in Harriman State Park
Consistently creating safe housing for those who have been homeless – and tirelessly advocating for the unhoused
I am always inspired by the ways the many people who work with CFTH continually fight for the rights of those who need housing and assistance. The CFTH sets an incredible example for their nonprofit and philanthropist peers in their clarity of mission and absolute determination to continue the fight for the rights of those who need housing and assistance. This team:
Advocates in court, seeking better shelter systems
Fights for new migrant folks who need shelter and a safe start
Provides nightly food vans that start from St. Bartholomew Church
Develops credible research reports and policy briefs that help articulate the real issues unsheltered people face and the solutions that can help them and our communities
I would like to personally recognize the leadership of Dave Giffen, Rolando Aviles, Tim Campbell, Lindsey Davis, Will Watts, Sarah Murphy, and Juan De La Cruz, and many others who show up consistently to do the work – and push for results. Thank you for all you do!
